BIO 210 Objectives for Lab Quiz 2

MICROSCOPE, TISSUES, & INTEGUMENT

The student will identify the parts of the microscope from Chapter 4. The student will know the function and how to use each part:

·         eyepiece with ocular lens

·         body tube

·         arm

·         nosepiece

·         rotating nosepiece

·         objective lenses

·         stage

·         stage (slide) clips

·         mechanical stage

·         mechanical stage control

·         fine adjustment

·         coarse adjustment

·         base

·         power switch

·         light control

·         substage light

·         condenser

·         iris diaphragm lever

The student will identify why a given slide is not viewable.

The student will identify the proper way to carry, use, clean and store a microscope.

The student will define:

·         tissue – Identify the four categories, functions and characteristics of each

·         histology

·         integumentary system

The student will identify the following from the microscope and skin model:

Three layers of the integument:

v      epidermis

vfive cell layers

v      stratum corneum

v      stratum lucidum

v      stratum granulosum

v      stratum spinosum

v      stratum basale

v      dermis

vTwo regions

v      papillary region – upper 1/5th

v      reticular region

v      hypodermis (subcutaneous)

The student will identify the following structures from the microscope or model:

v      Pacinian corpuscle (lamellated corpuscle)

v      Meissner’s corpuscle

v      hair root and shaft and follicle

v      sebaceous gland

v      arrector pili muscle

v      sudoriferous gland – eccrine & apocrine

TISSUES

The student will identify the tissues and features using the microscope.

Epithelial tissue (Epithelium)

TISSUE:                                   SLIDE or LOCATION:               FEATURES:

stratified squamous epithelium               epidermis

simple cuboidal epithelium                     kidney

simple columnar epithelium                   digestive tract

pseudostratified columnar epithelium      trachea lining                             cilia, goblet cell

transitional epithelium                           bladder

 Connective Tissue

TISSUE:                                   SLIDE or LOCATION:               FEATURES:

 Muscle Tissue

TISSUE:           FEATURES:

skeletal muscle              striations, multinucleated

cardiac muscle              striations, intercalated disc, branched fibers, nucleus

 Nervous Tissue

TISSUE:                                   SLIDE or LOCATION:               FEATURES:

nervous tissue                                       brain and spinal cord                 neuron

NOTE:

When asked to identify the type tissue, the student must include epithelial tissue (epithelium) or connective tissue with the type tissue.  Example: Simple squamous epithelial tissue or simple squamous epithelium, and dense regular connective tissue are correct; whereas, simple squamous or dense regular are incorrect.
