COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an introduction to human nutrition for students who have taken a biological sciences course in human anatomy and physiology. The student will learn nutritional biochemistry and apply these concepts to clinical nutrition, diet therapy, health promotion, and nutritional assessment.
PRE-REQUISITES: BIO 112 or BIO 210
REQUIRED MATERIAL:
Perspectives in Nutrition, Wardlaw, 5th or 6th edition
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Students will be allowed to miss twice the number of times a lecture meets per week. The lecture meets two times per week and four absences are allowed.
If the student misses more than 10 minutes of class by either arriving late or leaving early or during class, then the student will be counted as absent. If a student misses fewer than 10 minutes, then the student is counted tardy. Three tardies count as one absence. When a student exceeds the maximum allowable absences, a grade of "W" will be assigned if the student is passing the course or "WF" if the student is failing after midterm. A "WF" is calculated into the grade point average as an "F."
ASSIGNMENTS AND MISSED TESTS:
Students who are absent from a class are responsible for all work done during that class period and for all assignments made during the missed class period. Students adding courses after classes begin are responsible for work covered from the first day of classes. All classes missed are counted as absences. Follow the guidelines of the instructor regarding missed tests.
CODE OF CONDUCT:
Students are expected to review and abide by the Science Department’s Code of Conduct as reviewed in class and available at the science department website. Any disruption of class is unacceptable including the ringing and use of cell phones. All phones must be turned off at the beginning of class

You will need at least a 1 ½ or 2 inch notebook with dividers. Entries should be typed unless worksheets or calculations are used. Sections will include the following material: | |
1. | Chapter Objectives, assignments, and information from internet; include a list of websites with a statement on information obtained from that site. |
2. | Dietary /Health Risk Analyses |
a. Two day dietary intake and computer analysis | |
b. Design a 1200 kcal diet which conforms to current health guidelines (indicate what your goals are). | |
c. Calculate the calories as percent Carbohydrate, gat, protein and explain why you have chosen the percentage. Give the grams and servings for each. | |
3. | Compare food labels of items to be used in a diet menu for #2. |
4. | Advertisement Campaign and Nutrition Survey |
a. Make a survey to assess the health awareness of MTC students. | |
b. Interview 5 students not in this class. | |
c. Design and campaign to address the issues you deem important from your survey and give details on how you can implement his on campus. | |
5. | Disease and Relation to Nutrition |
Choose three chronic disorders associated with nutrition | |
Describe the disease and how nutrition plays a role in causing, preventing, and/or treating the disease. Each report must be typed, if single spaced you should have 1 ½ pages to cover the information. | |
6. | Reviews/Critiques of any three Popular Diets and review one scientific journal article - include a copy of the article. |
