CHM 211 (Organic Chemistry 1):

Students will develop the following skills for the following classes of aliphatic compounds: alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, dienes, alkynes, alcohols, alkyl halides, and ethers.  They will name and write structural formulas for compounds; recognize and write structural formulas for isomers; perform conformational analysis; describe bonding and structure using overlapping atomic orbitals; relate physical properties to structure; identify reagents for reactions, predict chemical products, identifying major product; write reaction mechanisms and cite experimental evidences thereof; identify stereoisomers as enantiomers or diastereomers; calculate % of enantiomers from specific rotation; apply stereochemical principles to reactions; synthesize compounds using series of chemical reactions.  Students will develop the following laboratory skills: recrystallation; melting point; distillation, TLC, gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, nmr spectra interpretation, run chemical reactions, analyze products and calculate % yield.
