Do all MTC early childhood courses count toward mandatory DSS hours?

Yes. MTC has more than 20 stimulating and relevant classes in Early Childhood Development (ECD), each of which counts toward your DSS requirements. Early childhood education taught by MTC includes interactive classroom experiences, as well as visits to a variety of nationally accredited child care and early education environments.

Is it expensive to take MTC childcare classes?

No. In fact it is likely the most affordable training available to you. If you work in a regulated child care program at least 30 hours a week, you may be eligible to receive a TEACH scholarship that covers 80 percent of your tuition. How can I fit an MTC courses into my schedule?

It’s easy. Just ask the hundreds of other teachers who are taking MTC classes. Midlands Technical College has designed its Early Childhood Development curriculum specifically for the working professional. We offer classes during most child care centers’ naptime. We also offer courses at night. With classes offered in five different locations, there’s no need to drive across town for class.

How will earning a college degree or certificate help me?

Working toward your college degree is perhaps the best thing you can do for yourself and the children in your care. College lets others know you are serious about your career and sets you up for professional advancement. The highest paid employees in ECD have a college degree. If you dream of someday operating your own center, we have a special curriculum for that.

How do I get started?

If you haven’t taken an ECD class with us, your first class will be our ECD 101. This is a great course to begin with because it touches on all the important aspects of growth and development, positive guidance techniques and developmentally appropriate activities you can use with your children. You’ll need to apply to the college, but that’s easy. Visit www.midlandstech.edu/ECD to learn how.

What if I’ve already taken ECD 101?

You’re ready to take the next step toward your certificate or degree. Before you can register for additional courses, you’ll need to take the college’s placement test. Don’t worry. This test isn’t used to determine if you can enter the college’s ECD program. It is used to help your program advisor determine what level English, Reading and Math classes are right for you.
