Admission Information

Steps to take for admission to Midlands Technical College and the Automotive Department

  • You must first complete an application to Midlands Technical College. The college application form is posted on our web site.
  • You will receive notification that your application has been received and that you must take the placement test. This is a test of your reading, writing and math skills.
  • Once you have completed the test you may schedule an advisement appointment with the Automotive Department at (803)738-7751. NOTE: All students wishing to enter the Automotive Department must meet with an automotive instructor for advisement, no one else may advise you for this department.

AUTOMOTIVE DEPARTMENT: Entrance Requirements

All Automotive Students Must Attend a MANDATORY New Student Orientation Prior To The Beginning Of Their First Semester In The Automotive Program - Failure to attend will result in being ineligible to attend automotive classes.

RDG Score of 80-Compass or 40 Asset-or DVS before entering automotive
MATH Score of 44PA-Compass or 40-asset-or DVS before entering Automotive
ENGLISH Score of 20-Compass or Asset-or DVS before entering Automotive

Open enrollment
Student may start any semester (daytime) or at the beginning of section (night)

Student may take Certificate or Associate degree program
Certificate – Certificate awarded for each successfully completed automotive course, 6 semesters/6 certificates total (60 credit hours).
Associate Degree – 6 semesters of automotive training plus 2 general ed. classes each fall and spring semester to complete in 2 years (total 84 cr.hrs.)

Automotive Course Sequence
New student will be placed in one of the following their first semester:
  • Electrical Systems (3 classes)
  • Brakes and Suspension (4 classes)
  • Heating and Air Conditioning (2 classes)
  • Engine Repair (2 classes)
All automotive courses have 2 to 4 classes to be taken concurrently: (Ex. Aut 141/Aut 241 must be taken the same semester.)

All students follow specific course sequence for 6 semesters:

Special Requirements:
  • Required tool list: approx. $1800 – 2800 cost first semester (no further requirement)
  • Work uniform – button down front shirt/work pants or properly fitting coveralls (in dark blue or black color)
